Field Test Smithsonian Science for Global Goals Access! Guide

Field Test Smithsonian Science for Global Goals Access! Guide

The Smithsonian Science Education Center is convening a cohort of science and social studies educators to field test a youth guide on access and accessibility. This group of educators will have the opportunity use parts of this Smithsonian Science for Global Goals guide as they are developed and offer their expertise on how our activities can be improved to better serve their students and community’s needs.

Field testing a Smithsonian Science for Global Goals guide is also an opportunity for FREE professional development! All educators in this cohort will be named in the credits of the published guide and given a certificate acknowledging their contribution. Field testers will also have access to a monthly virtual PLC where they can connect with other educators along with Smithsonian Science Education Center staff to share ideas and educational practices that can be applied in the classroom.

As a field tester you will be asked to:

  • Attend a 1-hour virtual field test orientation in Mid-October
  • Review 11-12 pages of written material monthly (November-April)
  • Implement at least one activity on access with your students monthly
  • Optional: Attend a 1-hour monthly PLC meetings to share feedback, network, and discuss educational best practices

If you have questions or would like more information on this opportunity, feel free to email the lead guide developer, Khadijah Thibodeaux, at ThibodeauxK@si.edu.

More information on the Access! guide: The Access guide will help youth learn about systems all people need such as food, housing, transportation, education, and healthcare. Students will be supported to use a social science lens, to investigate barriers to accessing these systems within their own community. They will then explore ways they can use STEM innovations to remove barriers to access and support accessibility.

More information on the Smithsonian Science for Global Goals Project: The Smithsonian Science Education Center (SSEC) has been developing free guides designed to help school-aged youth (ages 11-18) tackle complex, global issues related to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
