Building Awareness for Science Education

For communities interested in working with us, we offer one-day Building Awareness events contextualized for local needs. By exciting and informing key players on the need for systemic science education reform, the SSEC supports localities in garnering support for new and ongoing efforts to transform STEM education. 

Science Education Institutes for Leadership Development and Strategic Planning

Our 5-day institute guides leadership teams through the development of a five-year strategic plan for transforming science education in their community. This work is based on research and best practices for implementing hands-on, inquiry-centered STEM programs for students from kindergarten to twelfth grade. 

Implementation Institutes

After attending one of our Strategic Planning Institutes, many leadership teams return to their communities and discover specific aspects of implementing their strategic plan to be particularly challenging. We offer Implementation Institutes as follow up to better support communities at this stage.

STEM Education Summit

For schools and districts committed to diversifying their STEM teacher workforce, the Summit offers leadership teams the structure and resources to create plans for attracting and retaining teachers from underrepresented populations. The STEM Education Summit is just one component of an effort launched in 2015 by Shell Oil Company and the Smithsonian Science Education Center (SSEC) to foster change and increase diversity in the STEM teaching community. Another component, the playbook on Fostering Change, provides strategies and case studies for how to tackle this work.
