Smithsonian Science Education Academies for Teachers (SSEAT): Space Science | Huntsville, AL

The Smithsonian Science Education Academy for Teachers (SSEAT) on Space Science is a three-day in person professional development workshop for K-8 teachers that focuses on content knowledge and inquiry pedagogies, which will take place from July 19-21, 2022 in Huntsville, AL. Teachers will interact directly with experts in the field of Space Science including scientists and researchers and participate in hands-on activities that can be taken back to their classrooms. During this training we will discuss models of gravity, how space objects are being investigated, how to model space objects and distance, and how scientists innovate to help humans live in and benefit from zero gravity.

Fees and Registration

This training is being provided for free thanks to the generous support of the Richard Lounsbery Foundation and includes:

  • Admission to the U.S. Space & Rocket Center
  • Daily lunches (Tuesday - Thursday)
  • Course materials and resources
  • A certificate of participation
Academy Objectives

Teachers attending this academy will:

  • Participate in hands-on activities that translate directly into the classroom using a variety of resources.
  • Build a network of local educators to support classroom planning and diverse learning opportunities focused on Space Science.
  • Collaborate with museum professionals and other educators to understand how to use museums and their objects for instruction.
About SSEATs

The Smithsonian Science Education Academies for Teachers (SSEATs) provide teachers with an opportunity to take part in a week-long professional development course behind-the-scenes at Smithsonian museums and other world class research facilities throughout the greater Washington, DC area. The academies help to bridge the gap between the formal science education programs of the SSEC and the informal science education that exists throughout the Smithsonian, and combine training in science pedagogy with content presented by scientists and researchers who are experts in their fields.
