Patti Marohn
Patricia Marohn is the Managing Editor with the Curriculum and Communication division. She has a BA in Journalism from Loyola University Chicago. She worked for two major television networks, WGN and Fox, during her time in Chicago. She transitioned into publishing in Washington, DC, training as a copy editor with the American Geophysical Union, where she edited the Journal of Geophysical Research and Geophysical Research Letters. She joined the SSEC in 2013.
Lauren DiVito
Lauren creates digital visuals for scientific education. She was the first to graduate from the University of Windsor in Canada with a Bachelor of Science [honors] in chemistry and visual arts, a program created unique to her dual interests. She is now in the process of completing a Master of Science in Biomedical Communications at the University of Toronto, Canada. In the future, she hopes to continue pursuing paths that will allow her to explore her passions for museums, science education, reading, writing, and art.

Karen McDonald
Karen has been teaching informal science and environmental education programs for over twelve years, including managing park naturalist programs in Delaware, and starting up and running the Education and Outreach Program at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (SERC).
Simone Stewart
Simone initiates, processes, and monitors personnel actions through HRMS systems; ensures accurate information is reported and kept; and provides information to facilitate personnel management activities. Simone has assisted in the addition of 13 new employees and recruited 8 summer interns.
Trevor Owens
Trevor is the Special Curator for the Library of Congress science literacy initiative and doctoral candidate in George Mason University’s College of Education. He has recently written about imagining Earth from space before we went there and teaching science with historical primary sources.
Jannette Alston
Janette is a rising sophomore at Swarthmore College where she plans to major in Biology and Educational Studies. She wants to be a certified biology teacher and someday work in animal or wildlife conservation.
Joanna Green
Joanna is a recent graduate of the University of Georgia where she completed her Masters in Marine Science and a thesis on photochemistry and the microbial response in the Amazon River. She loves sharing her passion for science and believes anyone can be a scientist - even you!

Jean Flanagan
Jean Flanagan is the Science Education Research Specialist on the Curriculum and Communication division. She works on the design and development of the SSEC’s digital and print learning materials with a focus on research, standards, and best practices. Jean came to the SSEC in 2013 from a previous position as a Research Associate at AAAS Project 2061, where she contributed to federally funded research and development projects exploring the design of high-quality curriculum materials and assessments tightly aligned to national science standards.
Marjee Chmiel, PhD
Marjee is the Director of Evaluation and Editorial Development at Howard Hughes Medical Institute. Marjee previous worked at the Smithsonian Science Education Center as the Division Director of Curriculum and Communications. Marjee has an undergraduate degree in chemistry and a master's degree in curriculum design, both from Marquette University. Her PhD is from George Mason University in Educational Research and Evaluation Methods.
Katya Vines, PhD
As a curriculum developer at SSEC Katya is responsible for writing new science publications for elementary and middle school students.
Claudia Campbell
Claudia Campbell is retired from the Curriculum and Communication team. During her time at SSEC, Campbell focused on the development of early elementary curriculum and science literacy books that brought the science concepts to life by connecting to other areas of the curriculum and to the rich resources of the Smithsonian Institution.
Katie Gainsback
As the Assistant Division Director of Professional Services at the SSEC, Katie coordinates events promoting inquiry-based learning and STEM education across the United States for science teachers, administrators, and community partners.

Brian Mandell, PhD, is the Division Director of Curriculum and Communications for the SSEC. In this role, he provides support and direction for the talented Curriculum and Communication staff in the development of world-class print and digital curricular resources.
