Please join us for a virtual Biotechnology Academy, designed for high school educators to take a deep dive into Biotechnology! How can we ethically create a sustainable future using biotechnology?
OVERVIEW:
This 8-hour professional development will prepare educators to engage their students in biotechnology activities, guide student-driven investigation about biotechnology in their community, and facilitate conversations around ethical dilemmas in biotechnology. Together educators will explore how biotechnology can help achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals. By attending this training, educators will:
-
Learn how a wide range of biodiversity topics touch on sustainability and investigate how they show up in your community
-
Gain an understanding of how to facilitate student-led biotechnology investigations in the community and conversations around ethical questions in biotechnology
-
Develop an action plan for implementing the guide in your community
HOW TO APPLY
This opportunity is limited to 20 educators. To attend this Academy, educators must submit an application, due June 7, 2023. Selected educators will embark on an intensive 8-hour professional development June 12-15 from 7pm-9pm Eastern (Not sure what time that is where you are? Find your time zone here)
After completing the 8-hour intensive, participants will develop their plans to use the biotechnology guide, and present then to their peers and other educators during a 2-hour share out on July 11, 2023.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
This training will be held virtually over Zoom. An interactive Moodle course will also be provided to provide educators extra support, resources, and materials for review. Through this dual approach, educators will receive insight on integrating biotechnology into their classroom from other educators in their cohort, professionals working at the Smithsonian Science Education Center, and from external collaborators. The Smithsonian Science for Global Goals project offers freely-available community resource guides which explore issues including equity, justice, public health, and our relationship to the environment all within the context of using science to investigate and improve the community. Aligned to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, the guide focuses on sustainable actions that are defined and implemented by students.
