Revisiting the Objects of Inquiry Workshop: Using Smithsonian Resources in the STEM Classroom

Last month, the Smithsonian Science Education Center convened educators for the Objects of Inquiry: Using Smithsonian Collections and Resources in the STEM Classroom virtual workshop. We were excited to host an engaged group of educators from across multiple countries, for a day-long professional development workshop to learn how to use Smithsonian’s vast collections and resources in their classroom.

From exploring the inventive materials in historic prosthetics to understanding the interconnected relationship between plants and pollinators, this workshop provided participants with guidance on how to find and incorporate unique Smithsonian artifacts and resources in their classroom lessons. The workshop also highlighted the free science teaching and learning resources offered by the Smithsonian Science Education Center, including our immersive digital games and guides covering various STEM topics.

During the workshop participants also practiced using Universal Design for Learning strategies, including how to use multiple means of representation, engagement, actions and expression. Participants also heard from middle school STEM educator and Smithsonian Science for Global Goals field tester Jennifer Reichwage, who shared her own experience using Smithsonian and Smithsonian Science Education Center resources.

Workshop participants not only walked away with greater insight on how to access and use Smithsonian resources, but they also prepared a STEM lesson to teach in their classrooms. Using a range of STEM thematic topics and resources pre-selected by workshop facilitators, participants created an accessible lesson catered to the students they serve. Along with creating the lessons, the participants were also able to produce various learning materials and sample products including infographics, op-ed pieces, and presentations.
